Hello Mikaili! Could you present yourself in a few words to our readers that don’t know you yet?
I am 11 years old and I love to kitesurf. I am Brazilian and American. But I was born in Brasil and I live on the beach in Prea, Ceara. I am confident, competitive and friendly.
How did you start kiteboarding? Are other member of your family kiting also?
I started kiting because of my parents. They started kiting around year 2001 right when the first kites were coming out. I wasn’t even born yet. I started asking my parents to let me kite when I was just five, but my parents were afraid becasue kiting was so dangerous when they started they still had kitemares! Finally when I was 8 1/2 they let me start! Once I started, that was it! I was hooked!
You have been busy lately as you participated in two competitions in France, the Junior World Championship and the World Tour in Leucate. How did both competitions go?
In the Jr. World Championship, I won first place! I landed my S1 or S-bend Air Pass and a really good Blind Judge. I also did my NIS and other tricks. So I had very good heats and managed to place first for the second year in a row!
In Leucate, on the Pro Tour, I competed against the big girls! I had to make it trough the trials and, unfortunately, I didn’t qualify. I did’t get the luck of the draw either, which didn’t help. After winning my first heat, I had to compete against the winner of the the first set of heats where everyone else got to compete against the loser. So, knowing I was up against the best girl in the trials in my second heat and had to beat her to pass the trials, I developed a strategy… I decided it might be best to make all five of my tricks in the five different categories but do them with a bit of caution and LAND them. Maybe that way I would get enough points to win the heat. So I did all five tricks and landed them. I thought I won but the judges explained to me that in the Pro Tour, they were really looking for POWER in all of the tricks and becasue I didn’t do my tricks with a lot of power, Francesca won the heat! I was sad at first but then I was okay becasue I reminded myself that I am only 11 years old and have a lot of time ahead of me. Now I am training POWER, POWER, POWER!
You are also part of the F-ONE Next Generation team. Tell us more about your experience so far.
F-One is the best! They are the only kitesurfing company that has the Next Generation team. We are made up of about 10 kids from around the world between the ages of 10 to 17. (I guess it is age ten becasue I was ten last year.) We get together with Etienne Lhôte, an ex-pro rider who also rides for F-One. We meet once a year for a ten day training camp somewhere in the world. Etienne helps us with our tricks, fitness, riding skills, competition strategies and more. We shoot a cool video, too! It is really neat because we make good friends from all over, we get to experience a new culture and we get to learn a lot of new tricks on the water too. F-One always has a coach available to help us at competitions too. It is really awesome. I have been part of the Next Generation Team for two years now.
What are your favorite conditions?
My favorite conditions are when I am on my 7 – 9 meter kite with a bit of chop so I can do my tricks off of a kicker.
Who is your biggest inspiration within the kitesurfing industry?
Bruna Kajiya is my biggest inspiration because she came and stayed at my families hotel for 10 days when I was 9. She was recovering from her knee injury. She was so nice to me and kiting with me a lot. She taught me how to do my front roll and that is what started it all! After she left it was my goal to get better at the sport and maybe one day be better than her! She is a lot older than me you know! Thank you, Bruna.
What is your biggest dream?
My biggest dream is to be the world champion one day.
What do you like to do besides kiteboarding?
I like to ride my motorcycle in the dunes and on the beach. And I like to ride my horse, Bisouro. Sometimes, I take him swimming in the ocean.
What are your plans for the upcoming months?
I am planning to train hard and improve my kiting. I kitesurf everyday where I live so I hope to learn 2 new tricks each month!
Who among your kite girl friends should be our next Miss Stance?
I think the next Miss Stance should be my dear friend, Nina Font from Spain! She is a very dedicated kitesurfer, too!
